Onion Tomato Chutney

Onion Tomato Chutney (or sometimes just refered ad Thakkali Chutney) is one of the most famous condiments in south India (read Tamilnadu). We people often make this at home for idlis and dosas and its indeed delicious.  I just lick the chutney as is when my mom makes it.

  • 1 Onion
  • 2 Tomatoes
  • 2 Garlic Cloves
  • 2 - 3 Red Dry Chillis
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • salt as needed
  • tamarind (marble size)
  • a small piece ginger (optional)

  • Heat oil in a pan, and once hot add the garlic and red chillis. Fry then for few seconds and then add roughly chopped onion and saute it until soft.
  • Then add the tomatoes and saute everything together,.

  •  Cook till tomatoes turn nice and soft. Turn off stove and cool it.
  • Then grind it along with salt and tamarind. Adjust water when grinding.

  • As all the ingredients are fried already, tempering (tadka) is not actually needed for this chutney.
  • But if you want, you can do a simple tadka with oil, mustard, jeera , hing and curry leaves.
  • Serve with idli /dosa of your choice. For more breakfast recipe refer HERE

 With Love,
