Peas Pulao in Microwave !

Peas Pulao aka Matar Pulao is the easiest yet flavorful one pot meal I make often. There are many ways to make a pulao like in pressure cooker, just a heavy bottomed vessel with lid or microwave.
I find microwave is the simplest option as you need not bother about anything after popping the vessel in the microwave. In cooker you have to be a little careful with the number of whistles and  when cooking directly in a vessel you have to be sure of water and when to reduce flame etc.
When it comes to peas pulao we like it to be very light instead of too much of masalas.
Just follow this recipe and make wonderful Peas Pulao in minutes hasslefree.

INGREDIENTS (No Onion No Garlic) (Serves 2)
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 3/4th  cup Green Peas (Fresh or frozen)
  • salt as needed
  • 1 1/2 cups hot water
  • 1 tbsp Ghee (or oil)
  • 2 Green Cardamoms
  • 4 Cloves
  • 1 stick Cinnamom
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1/2 tsp Garam Masala

To grind (with Little water)
  • 1 inch ginger piece
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • 2 Green Chillis

  • Wash and soak basmati rice for 30 minutes.
  • Grind ginger, green chilli and fennel with little water.

  •  In a pan, melt ghee and add teh whole spices and fry for few seconds.
  • Then add the peas and saute in ghee for a minute.

  •  Add the ground paste and saute further for a minute.
  • In a microwave safe bowl (Preferably glass), take the soaked rice, add the sauted items from pan, add hot water, salt and give a mix

  •  Sprinkle some garam masala and pop the bowl in the microwave and cook in high for 10 - 12 minutes.
  • Take it out and do not disturb it for 5 minutes. Then fluff the rice with a fork and serve.


  • The whole procedure can be cooked in a microwave too. Melt ghee in a glass bowl in microwave (30 secs) and then add whole spices (30 secs) and add peas and ground paste (30 secs) and then rice and water , salt etc and 10 minutes.
  • I made it No onion No Garlic, you can include them too. Saute onions before adding peas and include the garlic in the paste.
  • In case of cooking in cooker, just do the intial steps in the cooker itself, and add rice n water etc and cook for 2 whistles and then cook in low flame for 4 - 5 minutes and turn off.
  • Instead of cooking fully in water, you can add half water and half coconut milk.
  • Microwave cooking times may vary, so check the rice after 10 minutes, if not done cook for 2 more minutes.
  • Serve with any gravy dish of your choice.
