Kodo Millet Tomato Pulao !



I have been experimenting with Millets these days and trying to replace them for rice in number of ways. This tangy tomato pulao tasted truly delicious with millet and definitely it is no where inferior to the pulao made with rice.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup Kodo Millet / Varagu /Arikelu
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • a pinch of asafoedita
  • 2 Green chillis
  • 2 - 3 Garlic cloves
  • 1 medium onion
  • 3 - 4 Tomatoes
  • Few Mint Leaves
  • sat as needed
  • 1/2 tsp Chilli Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Garam Masala
  • 2 Cups water

STEPS

  • Wash and soak the millet for 15 - 20 minutes.
  • In a pressure cooker, heat oil and then add mustard seeds followed by Cumin and asafoedita.
  • Then add chopped green chillis and crushed Garlic.


  •  Add sliced onion and saute till transparent. Then add chopped tomatoes and cook until it is soft.


  •  Add some mint leaves , and the spice powders and required salt and give a mix.
  • Pour in water and allow to come to a boil.


  • Discard water from the soaked millet and add it to the boiling water in cooker.
  • Close and cook for 2 whistles and allow the pressure to release.
  • Fluff with fork, add some ghee (optional) and serve.

NOTES

  • You can make this recipe No Onion No Garlic discarding the onions and garlic.
  • Feel free to add some chopped carrots or peas to this and make it even healthier.
  • Adjust chillis and spice powders as per taste.
  • And yes, you can do the same dish with Barnyard Millet, Little Millet or Foxtail Millet too and of course with rice.
  • Serve with pickle and raita and a healthy wholesome meal is ready.
