Pongal Gothsu !

Gothsu (or Gotsu) or some ppl even say Gosthu is a simple and easy side for Pongal and they are really a match made in heaven.Though it can be served with Idli and dosa or even upma, I would say it is born for pongal  only.
There are many ways of making Gotsu and this one of the ways we make. I will post the other way also soon.

STEPS
  • In a pressure cooker, take moong dal, chopped brinjal, tomatoes, turmeric, salt, chilli powder and chopped chillis and add enough water.
  • Pressure cook for 2 - 3 whistles.
  •  Once pressure is released, add chopped coriander and keep it aside.
  • In a pan / kadai, heat oil, add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  • Throw in some broken red chillis, hing, jeera and some julieened ginger.
  • Then add the cooked brinjal and dal to this tadka and give a nice stir.
  • Allow the gothsu to come to a boil and then turn off stove.
NOTES
  • You can also make it with Onion and Garlic, just add them to the cooker and pressure cook along with others.
  • Do not mash the cooked dal and brinjal else the brinjal will disappear, we need to see some brinjal pieces here n there.
  • You can add small pieces of carrot and potato to this. But I like this way. When you are making for a larger crowd adding potato helps as it will help reduce dal quantity still giving the thickness.
  • Do not add more water in the cooker else it gothsu will become runny like sambar. It should thicker than sambar.
  • Some people also add tamarind extract to this. But I dont think its needed as the tomatoes are enough and I have been eating this from childhood as my mom makes this way.

With Love,
