Red Chutney / Spicy Tomato Chutney !



Can just three ingredients make such an yummy accompaniment for idlis and dosas. I just love this chutney especially when mom makes it when i visit her. Its truly finger licking good if you like spicy food.

STEPS
  • Chop tomatoes into quarters , peel garlic and grind them in a mixer with red chilli powder and salt. 
  • Add chilli powder according to your spice level.
  • Add little water if needed and grind to a smooth paste.


  • In a small pan / kadai heat 2 tbsp of oil and once hot add the mustard seeds. When they splutter add asafoedita and cumin seeds. 
  • Lastly add curry leaves and fry for few seconds.


  • Add the ground tomato mixture to the tadka and let it cook . Add some water and allow it cook for atleast 7 - 8 minutes.


  • Cook the chutney till the tomatoes are cooked fully and the raw smell of chilli powder fades away.
  • The chutney turns little thicker as shown in the second thumbnail
  • Oil starts oozing out at the edges and turn off the stove.

Serve this with idli / dosa and i never know how many idlis goes in when i have it with this chutney. :)

  1. what a simple recipe - how long can this be stored pavithra ?

    1. Hi Pooja, this cant be stored more than a day or two. If you want more shelf life then do not add any water when grinding tomato and cook for more time until oil oozes out well. tht becmes lke a tomato pickle / thokku consistency and can be stored for a week or more.
