Kodo Millet Pongal / Varagu Ven Pongal !

During my recent trip to India I got a chance to cook millets in many ways like pongal, dosa and even in sweet form. I even brought most of the millets with me to London and today i made this kodo millet pongal for breakfast. It tasted no less then normal rice pongal or i would say it even tasted better for me.
Millets are small grains that are very nutritious with more fibre content and they are a very good substitute to rice or wheat. They are easy to digest and good for diabetic patients as they release glucose very slowly.
Kodo millet is called as Varagu in Tamil and Arikelu in Telugu and Kodra in Hindi.

INGREDIENTS
  • 3/4 cup Kodo Millet (Varagu / Arikelu)
  • 1/4 cup Yellow Moong Dal (Siru Paruppu / Pesarapappu)
  • 2.5 cups water
  • salt as needed

  • 1 tbsp whole black pepper
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds (Jeera)
  • few curry leaves

  • a pinch of Asafoedita
  • 1 Green chilli chopped

  • Wash the millet and moong dal together veru well twice/thrice.
  • Take them in a pressure cooker and add 2.5 cups of water and required salt and pressure cook for 2 - 3 whistles.
  • Open the cooker when pressure settles.
  • In a small tadka pan, take ghee or oil and once hot add the cashewnuts and the pepper.

  •  Once they are roasted well, add asafoedita, jeera, curry leaves (i didnt have) , green chillis and ginger and saute for few seconds.
