Barnyard Millet Peas Cilantro Pulao !


Barnyard millet known as Kuthiraivali in Tamil is another healthy grain in our millet family. Offlate  Iam trying to  include millets in daily food and trying out different recipes with them. So i just made this pulao like I do with normal rice. And I must say it tasted awesome  with a cup of raita.

STEPS

  • Wash the millet very well 3 to 4 times. Soak it for 10 - 15 minutes.
  • Mean while chop onions, garlic, ginger and keep other things ready.



  • Grind together, green chillis, garlic, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, fennel and the coriander with little water to a smooth paste.


  • In a heavy bottomed vessel or pressure cooker add oil, then bay leaves and jeera. 
  • Then add the onions and saute them well. Once they turn translucent add the peas (fresh or frozen).



  • Now add the ground cilantro paste and saute for a minute.
  • Add two cups water, required salt and some garam masala.

  • Add the soaked barnyard millet and mix well. Close the vessel and cook in high for 3 - 4 minutes until the water is absorbed almost. 
  • Then lower the flame and cook for 5 - 6 minutes until the millet is cooked well and all water is gone.
  • Fluff with a fork and serve, Squeeze lime juice if desired.
  • If you are using cooker, then cook for 2 whistles and turn off stove.


  • Serve this healthy pulao with a simple raita. Enjoy the meal guiltfree !
  • Do try this recipe with other  kodo or little millet too !
